Surgical Treatments for Wrinkles by Dr. Brian Evans

Wrinkles can be caused by age, too much sun exposure, cigarette smoking and exposure to smoke, and heredity. Whatever the cause is, the appearance of wrinkles is inevitable. But don’t lose hope because science can remove wrinkles in certain areas of the skin. This article tackles about some of the surgical treatments to manage the appearance of wrinkles.

The Endoscopic Browlift

Generally speaking, wrinkles often appear first in the brow and forehead. The wrinkles on these areas can be smoothed out by a browlift. A brow lift can be done as an individual procedure or can be performed with other cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels, eyelid surgeries, and facelift.

The traditional browlift is done by making an incision in the scalp; this procedure is commonly called as the “coronal” browlift. However, modern sciences have replaced this approach to a less traumatic procedure called the endoscopic browlift. This procedure is more advantageous because it has smaller incision sites and it has shorter healing time.

An endoscopic browlift is usually done within 1 to 2 hours and the patient can go home afterwards. Facility confinement is unnecessary for this procedure. However, it would be best if you arrange a ride home because numbness and swelling could occur.

Mild bruising and swelling could last for a week or two, depending on the patient’s ability to adapt. These symptoms could easily be masked with a makeup, so there’s no need to worry if you intend to go back to work while the swelling is still prominent. However, doctors usually advise their patients to resume usual activities after a week or two and strenuous activities should be avoided for the next two to three weeks.

The results could last for several years but could never be permanent since a person continues to age. However, if you wish to maintain a well rested and pleasant expression on the upper part of your face, you may have another browlift surgery since repeat procedures are safe and just as effective.

Mid Facelift Surgery

The wrinkles in the mid-face area can deepen the smile lines which could give you an older appearance. A mid facelift surgery lifts this area to refine and boost the appearance of you face which could make you look years younger.

Like the browlift surgery, this procedure also lasts for one to two hours and could cause mild bruising and swelling right after the surgery. Patients who had undergone a mid facelift surgery are advised to refrain from doing strenuous activities during the first month after the procedure. However, normal physical activities could resume after a week or two or until the patient can tolerate it.

A mid facelift surgery aims to provide a youthful look by pulling the cheek fat up onto the bones of the cheeks. By doing so, the cheek folds will flatten which will conjure a softer, younger, and happier look in the middle part of your face. But then again, the result could vary depending on your skin type, current age, amount of skin removed, condition and texture of the skin, and healing ability.

Both the endoscopic browlift and mid facelift surgery are generally considered safe. However, like any other invasive procedures, risks and complication could possibly occur. These include but are not limited to bleeding, scarring, infection, or anesthesia-related side effects.

If you wish to have your wrinkles surgically removed, it is highly important to contact a reliable board certified surgeon to perform the procedure.
